Leash Walking

Leash walking is a simple and effective way to establish the dynamics of your relationship with your dog; you as leader and your dog as follower. Maintaining the proper mindset and practicing good leash handling skills will ensure you are able to communicate clearly and effectively with your dog to ensure enjoyable walks for you and your dog. Let's discuss some ways to help you with your leash walking.

Use a properly fitted 2.5mm or 3mm Herm Sprenger Prong Collar along with a 6-foot leash. Hold the leash loosely so there is no tension on the leash, but keep the leash comfortably in your control to give direction or correction when needed. The Herm Sprenger Prong Collar makes it simple to provide direction or correction, which is why I highly recommend it.

Walk with your dog at your side. Whether you use your left side or right side is entirely your decision, but be consistent to make it easier for your dog to learn.  Your dog should follow your body’s direction – forward, stop, left, right – and there should be no sniffing, marking, lunging, or barking while you walk. Bathroom breaks should only occur after a command is given to release the dog from the structured leash walk (e.g., "Break").
