The goal of dog training is to increase the occurrence of behaviors we want and decrease the occurrence of behaviors we do not want. For example, we want to increase the occurrence of behaviors associated with obedience commands, such as Sit, Down, and Come. On the other hand, we want to decrease the occurrence of problem behaviors, such as Leash Pulling and Jumping. This basic concept of encouraging behaviors we want and discouraging behaviors we do not want forms the foundation of behavior modification. We use this concept as our foundation to target and address our dogs’ behaviors.
We can apply this concept narrowly to modify an individual behavior that requires attention. An example of this would be problem solving an unwanted behavior or teaching an obedience command. This allows us to target a specific behavior and increase or decrease the occurrence of that particular behavior.
We can also apply this concept broadly to modify a series of behaviors. An example of this would be a Board & Train program. A Board & Train program addresses multiple behaviors. The goal of the Board & Train program is to teach a series of behaviors that form a comprehensive foundation for a well-balanced dog.
Now we will just need the right mindset, tools and techniques to modify our dogs' behaviors. You can get started by browsing my dog training tips which offer my general approach to addressing common behavioral issues. If you need hands-on assistance you can book your dog for a Board & Train with me.
